If you look at things from an outside perspective, St. Mary’s football hasn’t changed much. Sure, they haven’t won a district or conference championship since 2012, but the look of them is arguably the best it’s ever been since coach Bethany took over. He’s implemented his high-flying spread offense and turned the Dragons into a preferred program to play football at. Kevin Coleman is already a feared receiver in the area and one of the best sophomores in the country after racking up over 1000 yards and ten touchdowns from his quarterback, Cam’Ron McCoy. The senior QB threw for 1,947 yards in ten games last season and is receiving D1 attention. Despite losing three of his five top targets, McCoy and the Dragons always reload. Timothy Muxo returns, and we could see a lot Dqaun and Dwaun Valley, who both transferred from Miller Career in the offseason. St. Mary’s struggled to get a consistent ground game going last year, but their two top backs are sophomores, DeShaun Fuller and Tariq Mack. Jason Groves and Darius Harris return in the trenches while Que McBroom is a welcome addition from U City. Defensively, the Dragons look to be in better shape with talented defensive end Patrick Harris returning who will put tons of pressure on quarterbacks. Still reasonably young on defense, particularly at linebacker, expect hard-hitting Achille Kpeya to have a breakout year while Coleman, Fuller, and Muxo return to the secondary.

This is quite possibly Bethany’s best team overall since he’s taken over at St. Mary’s. Defensively there are more pieces in place with younger, raw talented guys getting a year older, and the size up front is bigger. The offense will continue to put up big numbers even though we might see Coleman get doubled up, but still, they’ll have the athletes for McCoy to exploit opposing defenses. They’ve strengthened their schedule and could see a similar regular-season record to last season depending on how they start, but the goal is to prepare for the playoffs in Class 4. Lastly, St. Mary’s, at least, will be one of the most entertaining teams to follow.
