For the first time in a long time, the Pioneers aren’t all that hyped up, which is something they can use to their advantage all the while being more well-rounded than last year. Kirkwood returns four starting offensive linemen with Mizzou commit, Jay Maclin. However, the offense has a significant turnover in athlete production. Kannon Nesslage is a promising pocket quarterback with his tall frame. Add in Drummond and Fortner who already look like legit impact players, especially Fortner from what we’ve seen at 7-on-7’s with his ability. The Pioneers should have a more prominent, more experienced line to take some pressure off Drummond to settle in and keep defenses honest. Defensively they lose most of their defensive line and secondary, but return their leading tackler, Cameron Macon and see William Lee step into a linebacker role. Lee has a massive ceiling in that position and won’t be surprised if he gets postseason recognition. A big key for this team is if they can stay consistent through four quarters instead of one half. I don’t think they’ll reach last year’s offense’s explosive potential, but if the consistency is there, they’ll win more games and be a more robust team to deal with throughout the season.
